Organizational Background

Shanti San Francisco has provided peer-based support to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer for almost 30 years. The Shanti Model of Peer Support has been adapted by organizations throughout the world. In 1998, Shanti launched the Shanti National Training Institute (SNTI)--to make lessons learned at Shanti available to a wide range of human service organizations. More than 1000 organizations across the country have received SNTI training and technical assistance. A project of the SNTI, the California Peer Educator Project (CPEP) is a community-based, capacity building program, which seeks to enhance the skills and knowledge of minority peer educators in California--in order to bring more persons with HIV/AIDS from ethnic minority communities in for testing and care. The project also seeks to build the capacity and cultural competency of organizations statewide to train, support, supervise and retain skilled minority peer educators.
