Title: California Peer Educator Project (CPEP) Intern Mentor/ Supervisor: CPEP Project Director Required Availability: Monday – Friday 9:00 –
5:00 Hours Per Week: Minimum of 16 hours per week
Organizational Background
Shanti San Francisco has provided peer-based support to individuals affected
by HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer for almost 30 years. The Shanti Model of
Peer Support has been adapted by organizations throughout the world. In
1998, Shanti launched the Shanti National Training Institute (SNTI)--to
make lessons learned at Shanti available to a wide range of human service
organizations. More than 1000 organizations across the country have received
SNTI training and technical assistance. A project of the SNTI, the California
Peer Educator Project (CPEP) is a community-based, capacity building
program, which seeks to enhance the skills and knowledge of minority peer
educators in California--in order to bring more persons with HIV/AIDS
from ethnic minority communities in for testing and care. The project
also seeks to build the capacity and cultural competency of organizations
statewide to train, support, supervise and retain skilled minority peer
educators.
Professional Development Opportunities
Learn about and practice skills in community organizing/networking,
Develop an awareness of the specific issues facing people with HIV/AIDS
Gain skills in assessing community needs; outreach/marketing; research
and evaluation; coordinating programmatic advisory committees; program
design, implementation, evaluation and quality assurance; provision
of technical assistance and training to local communities and research
Learn about specific topic areas, such as cultural competence, HIV/AIDS
related topics and client concerns, self-care, harm-reduction, and peer
counseling/peer support.
Intern Training and Support Provided
Attend weekly meetings with CPEP mentor/supervisor and/or general
intern supervisor with regards to progression and/or receive feedback.
Visit staff at collaborative agencies to become familiar with other
community organizations providing services, and their relationships
with Shanti.
Attend CPEP multi-day workshops and other appropriate workshops as
needed.
Participate in weekly CPEP update meetings.
Attend curriculum design meetings.
Attend Volunteer Service interview and training, depending on available
schedule.
Participate in technical assistance sessions provided to enrolled
organizations.
This is not an exhaustive list of opportunities. Training and support
may be tailored to better meet the needs of each intern.
Intern Responsibilities
Participate in programmatic aspects of producing CPEP workshops for
organizations that provide services to people with HIV/AIDS, this would
also include marketing, assessing training needs, evaluating/debriefing
training sessions.
Conduct literature reviews and other research activities to assist
with compiling/developing training and technical assistance materials.
Assist with website design.
Assist with CPEP program community outreach.
Other appropriate projects as needed.
Qualifications
Sensitivity to and/or experience with needs and circumstances of people
with HIV disease or other life-threatening illness—including issues
related to diversity, substance use, mental illness, homelessness and
marginalized populations
Interest in community organizing/development in people of color communities
Commitment to service as a personal value
Web-based and other research skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Well organized and attentive to details
Ability to work independently and as part of the team
Ability to interact with individuals in a diverse environment
Cultural sensitivity and awareness
Receptive to constructive feedback
Excellent computer skills--especially MS Word and MS Access
Must be 18 years or older
Bilingual (Spanish/Chinese/Tagalog) desirable, but not necessary.
