CPEP Training Philosophy

The CPEP approach to training is based on Shanti's 30 years of experience in training volunteer caregivers and in the current best practices of adult education. The learning experience for participants is focused on who they are as individuals and what they bring in terms of their previous experience and personal wisdom. CPEP trainings and workshops are always "about the participants." Actively engaging participants in the learning process through creative activities and facilitated discussions, the CPEP training perspective acknowledges the different learning styles of participants as well as their unique backgrounds and cultures. It is based in the firm belief that learners are also teachers, that trainers and trainees alike need to be actively involved in a shared learning experience.

Mutual respect is at the core of the values that shape CPEP trainings. Participants are considered honored guests, with special attention given to the atmosphere and physical comfort of the training site. Trainings are conducted in a circle, calling to mind the history of human gatherings and ritual. Fresh flowers, music and food are used as important elements of hospitality. Each and every person has the opportunity to have his or her voice heard through the sharing of personal stories of life experiences, beliefs and knowledge. Ample opportunities are provided for participates to connect with one another in order to build a training community that's rich with shared learning, common values and the building of new relationships.

Information, skills and immediate skills practice are offered in a curriculum that takes into account the learner's current knowledge and needs. Building on personal and professional experiences, the curriculum focuses on giving trainees insights and new information that will enhance their effectiveness at work and in their personal lives. Trainees are both encouraged to participate and given support to take risks. In this process of personal exploration, expression and growth, when issues of feelings and spirit arise they are embraced as being part of the comprehensive approach to training. CPEP trainings are seen as being rewarding, enriching experience that promote growth and learning for participants. We hold training as a gift we can give to participants and trainers alike.
