CPEP staffCHRISTIAN ALVEZ, CPEP TRAINER/CONSULTANTChristian is a Trainer/Consultant at Shanti in San Francisco. As the Youth Program Coordinator at Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) in Los Angeles, Christian began his 7-year work at community-based organizations and health institutions providing health education and training to clients and peer educators from diverse populations including substance users, MSM, and communities of color. At APAIT, Christian created a youth mentorship/coaching program where youth were paired with local artists. As a Research Assistant at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for a nationwide study on young men who have sex with men (YMSM's), Christian developed workshop curricula as well as trained peer educators to create a non-profit organization by YMSM's for YMSM's. At Filipino Task Force on AIDS in San Francisco, Christian revitalized Tambayan, the Men's Program which included prevention case management for both HIV positive and HIV negative clients. Serving substance using communities and communities of color, Christian oversaw the Outreach and Education program at Bay Area Young Positives and provided peer support to youth living with HIV/AIDS. To his position at the California Peer Educator Project, Christian brings his peer education experience and presentation and facilitation skills to train and provide technical assistance to HIV/AIDS peer educators throughout the state of California to enhance their skills in linking HIV positive persons into testing and care. LISA SALAZAR, SHANTI NATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE PROGRAM COORDINATORIn May of 1999, Lisa began her relationship with Shanti as a volunteer, providing emotional support to a Shanti client living with AIDS and serving as a facilitator to a volunteer support group. Prior to her volunteer work with Shanti, Lisa gained over 25 years of volunteer experience in a wide variety of areas, such as paramedic explorer, rape crisis counselor and adult literacy tutor. Since her professional work began (in November 2000) with the Shanti National Training Institute, Lisa has increased her knowledge and experience in the fields of Volunteer Management and Peer Education training. Lisa started out in the Administrative Coordinator position and her work was primarily focused on SNTI's Volunteer Management program called In the Spirit of Service (ISS). When the California Peer Educator Project (CPEP) came on board in the fall of 2002, Lisa was promoted to the Program Coordinator position and her primary focus became supporting this new project, while still managing and maintaining the ISS. During her 4 years working with SNTI, Lisa has had the unique opportunity to work with, learn about and support two diverse training programs as well as working with and learning from a unique and diverse staff. VERONICA KEIFFER , CPEP TRAINER/CONSULTANTVeronica Keiffer, M.A., is an instructional designer, multicultural education scholar/researcher and training specialist, with 11 years experience specializing in issues of cultural diversity and cultural competence. She has worked, volunteered and served as a nonprofit board member in the Diversity Education field for the past 11 years. Her work has focused on developing multicultural capacity building and increasing sensitivity and awareness among corporate cultures, institutions of education, and within health care and community based organizations. Veronica began her work in the field of Diversity Education at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where during her tenure she focused on Diversity Dialogue Groups, diversity training tools and techniques, and cross-cultural mentoring. She has co-founded and serves as the Vice President and Diversity Training Director for The You In Me, Inc. a Multicultural Art Education not-for-profit that focuses on addressing oppression and providing and promoting diversity education through the arts. Prior to joining the staff at Shanti Veronica served as Director of I-Pride, Inc., which provided various services and peer education to the Interracial and Intercultural Community. Additionally, she worked as diversity specialist, trainer and curriculum designer for the Childcare Health Program, as well as Research Assistant for the Public Health Institute and the Department of Education at Mills College. To her position at CPEP, Veronica brings outstanding training, presentation and facilitation skills, experience providing training and technical assistance to communities of color, knowledge and experience in qualitative research, curricula design, and issues of multiculturalism. DAVID MAURICE JONES, CPEP PROJECT DIRECTORDavid Maurice Jones has worked, volunteered and served as a nonprofit board member in the HIV/AIDS field for the past 17 years in communities of color and held a training or technical assistance position for the last 12. Prior to joining SNTI, David was Program Director for Training and Technical Assistance at Bailey House, Inc., an AIDS supportive housing program in New York City. At Bailey House, David managed 7 staff across three government-funded programs, including one that served Congressional Black Caucus-eligible agencies. The programs focused on providing training to hundreds of staff from HIV/AIDS organizations each year, including case mangers, clinical directors, support group counselors, and program management/housing operations staff. He also managed a program that served people with AIDS directly by providing living skills training. Additionally, David provided technical assistance to HIV/AIDS service agencies with regard to program plans, brochures, job descriptions, budgets, and linkages. Prior to this work David managed a national AmeriCorps program with 100 volunteer members, many of whom where young people from minority communities. The members engaged in development, youth programming and housing initiatives within low-income neighborhoods. He coordinated member training, benefits, and support--throughout 12 local offices in the United States. In addition he provided technical assistance to inner city, public schools in Chicago. His work included staff development and the creation of school learning centers. David also trained business development Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya and served in the Peace Corps for 2 years--where he taught youth at a trade school, trained business owners, and facilitated the training and development of 20 community health workers who were stationed in poverty-level neighborhood districts around Nairobi, Kenya. To his position at CPEP, David brings outstanding training presentation and facilitation skills, experience providing training and technical assistance to diverse groups, and broad knowledge of nonprofit management, program development, and issues related to HIV/AIDS. |
