Peer Advocacy and Treatment Advocacy
Peer Advocates and Treatment Advocates have intimate knowledge and experience with HIV disease and treatments related to HIV disease, and are trained to provide support and navigation through health system for persons with HIV/AIDS.
Peer Advocates and Treatment Advocates provide:
- Outreach and Engagementfunctioning as "client navigators", locating people with HIV disease in shelters, soup lines, self-help centers, SRO hotels, etc., and connecting them with HIV/AIDS services.
- Needs Assessmentsassisting clients with HIV disease in evaluating their needs for medical care, medication adherence, food, shelter, clothing, transportation, substance use information, mental health concerns, benefits, and other important issues.
- Information & Referralproviding information about and referral to agencies that supply medical services, tokens, clothing vouchers, food, substance use services, mental health services, and more.
- Medical and Medication Assistanceassisting with the difficulties of sticking to a complicated schedule of medications, accompanying clients to medical appointments, and advocating with medical providers. Providing up-to-date medication, treatment, drug trials and studies information.
- Emotional Supportproviding peer counseling including harm reduction strategies for substance use.
- Practical Supportassisting with laundry, house cleaning, grocery shopping, medication pick-up and delivery, and assisting with the completion of forms related to housing, disability, medical and mental health services, etc.
Peer Advocacy and Treatment Advocacy services are provided at Shanti's Drop-in Service Center, and at Black Coalition on AIDS, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, San Francisco General Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital.
Peer Advocacy and Treatment Advocacy services are provided Tuesday through Thursday at Shanti's Drop-in Service Center from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Shanti Peer Advocates conduct community outreach to connect with people living with HIV/AIDS, address barriers in accessing services, and to serve as navigators through the complicated health and social services systems. Peer Advocates assist clients in maintaining medical adherence regimens as well as providing practical assistance and emotional support. Peer Advocates provide services to over 600 clients in Shanti's Drop-in Service Center and at partner sites throughout the San Francisco.
