Title: Deputy Development Director
Reports to: Development Director and CFO

Position Overview
Shanti offers a supportive work atmosphere, and the staff is mission-driven, passionate and includes many former volunteers. Reporting to the Development Director and CFO, the Deputy Development Director will assume leadership of the continued growth and expansion of Shanti's fundraising efforts and sustaining the organization’s enhanced visibility in the foundation and philanthropic communities and will have primary responsibility for grant research, writing and foundation relationships. The successful candidate could be expected to move into the Development Director position within 18 to 24 months
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assume responsibility for Shanti’s grant process and foundation relationships
- Initiate contact and manage relationships with foundation grant officers
- Write and submit grant applications, reports, progress updates, letters of inquiry and other written materials
- Research, analyze and prioritize new sources of funding and revenue from foundations, businesses, individuals and philanthropic networks
- With the Development Director and Development Coordinator, assist in Shanti’s semi-annual special events, including the Annual Anniversary Event for 500+ and an annual event for the Breast Cancer Program
- Assume responsibility for developing the annual development plan with the Development Chair and Committee
- Assume responsibility for developing the annual development plan with the Development Chair and Committee
- Work with the Development Director, Executive Director and development team to manage the major donor program and continue to grow the individual donor program
- Work with the Development Director, Executive Director and Board Members to recruit, cultivate and maintain relations with donors and prospective donors
- Work with the Development Director, Executive Director, Board Members and staff to increase the number, consistency and size of gifts, sponsorships and grants
- With the assistance of the Development Coordinator, oversee and manage the production of at least two direct mail donor appeals annually
- With the assistance of the Development Coordinator, oversee the timely acknowledgment of all gifts
- Conceive, coordinate, produce and manage follow-up activities from fundraising events
- Oversee the management and maintenance of Shanti's fundraising database
- Develop and oversee a structured planned giving program
- With the assistance of the Development Coordinator, oversee publication of semi-annual agency newsletter
- With the assistance of the Development Coordinator, oversee an online giving program
- Manage electronic donor communications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum three years prior grant writing experience
- At least two years additional experience in either major gifts, direct mail and/or event planning/coordination
- Demonstrated mastery of a wide range of fundraising techniques and tangible track record of success in development
- Demonstrated success in securing major financial commitments and achieving personal revenue targets
- Thorough knowledge of marketing and donor stewardship methods
- Experience with and desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment
- Superior written and oral communications and interpersonal and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of a diverse team and manage and motivate others
- Computer proficiency and experience using Exceed database software, or similar donor management software. Thorough knowledge of Excel and aptitude with reconciling donor results with accounting reports.

- Bachelor’s degree

General Description
Shanti advances its vision of healthy individuals, organizations, and communities through exemplary training and education, volunteer services, practical and emotional support, counseling, research and publications, and transformative leadership.
The existence of a thriving Planning Council is essential to successfully meeting the service needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in San Francisco and the Bay Area. With an effective Council, a community can effectively coordinate its resources. The San Francisco HIV Health Services Planning Council, www.sfcarecouncil.org, is a community planning group that oversees the prioritization and allocation of Ryan White CARE Act Part A funds.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Record minutes all HIV Health Services Planning Council Meetings, approximately one per month, in the early evening
- Download, project and generally assist (PowerPoint) presentations at the Council meetings
- Record all HIV Health Services Planning Council Committee Meetings, approximately six per month, in the late afternoon or early evening
- Ensure all Council Meetings are audio recorded, downloaded and copied to a compact disc monthly
- Assist in Council compliance with Sunshine Ordinance/Brown Act regulations
- Assist with other administrative duties at Planning Council Meetings and Committee Meetings, as needed
- Assist Administrative Program Manager in preparing for meetings, copying documents, and general meeting support
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Program Knowledge: Microsoft WORD, ACCESS, PowerPoint, Outlook, EXCEL, also a basic knowledge of Macromedia Dreamweaver is desirable
Physical Qualifications
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds
- Able to perform duties such as filing, bending and reaching, and extensive work at a computer keyboard
