Volunteer Opportunities
Shanti offers opportunities for members of the community to be of service, to put their
compassion, their skills, and their interests into action to support people living with the
challenges of HIV/AIDS and breast cancer.
Volunteer opportunities at Shanti include:
- Peer Support to Shanti Clients living with HIV/AIDS or breast cancer (4-6 hours a week based on volunteer's schedule). Peer support volunteers provide emotional support (supportive listening, conversation, companionship) and practical assistance (light housekeeping, errands, laundry, cooking, pet care). A 25-hour training is required and provided.
- Social Service Field Work/Internships (per intern's schedule and requirements): Quality supervision and meaningful experiences for students in need of practicum or internship experiences in the following Shanti programs: Care Coordination, LifeLines, L.I.F.E., Peer Advocacy, and Volunteer Services.
- Activities Desk (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday at Shanti; one day a week): Desk volunteers, using customer service skills and/or entertainment experience, reserve and distribute free event tickets (concerts, live theater, and more) to clients via the phone and in person.
- Client Workshops and Classes and Services (Daytime or evening): Volunteers plan and implement educational, cultural, or recreational activities (Tai Chi, writing, art, etc.) or offer a service (haircuts, massage, resume writing, etc.).
- Fundraising (one or two times per year): Volunteers plan, implement, and staff special events using creativity, committee skills and experiences.
- General Office/Clerical (9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday 2-4 hours shifts): Assist with all kinds of clerical tasks: filing, copying, mailings, and more, utilizing good office practices skills and experiences
